3 Tips To Help You Survive A Major Kitchen Renovation

December 8, 2021

While taking on a major kitchen renovation might be exciting when you think about how fresh and new everything will be when it’s finished, actually going through the process of renovating your kitchen can be a real headache.

Since so many people spend a huge portion of their home time in their kitchen, not being able to use this space as you’re used to can present a lot of challenges. So to help you get through this time, here are three tips to help you survive a major kitchen renovation.

Pack Away What You Don’t Need

With your kitchen getting completely torn apart, you’re going to have to take everything out of the space and move it somewhere else.

If you have a storage unit or extra space somewhere that you can keep all of your stuff, great. But if you don’t, you might wonder about how much to actually pack away and how much to just move.

Ideally, you should try to pack away whatever you’re not going to need during that time. So while it’s wise to keep a few cups, bowls, plates, and silverware, you should pack away any big items or fancy kitchenware that you won’t have use for while the construction is taking place. This way, you can ensure that it will stay safe while your kitchen is being renovated.

Move Your “Kitchen” Somewhere Else

For the items that you don’t pack away, you should try to set up a makeshift “kitchen” somewhere else in your home. This way, you’ll still be able to eat at home even though your kitchen won’t be functional in a traditional sense.

It’s best to try to move your “kitchen” to some place that has easy access to water, like a bathroom, mud room, or even your garage. By doing this, you’ll be able to wash any dishes that you’re using and use some of your smaller appliances to do light cooking.

Plan For Higher Food Costs

Along with the money that you’ve budgeted for the actual renovation, you’ll also need to consider how not having a kitchen will impact your monthly food budget.

Because you likely will be eating out more than you normally do when you have a full kitchen to work with, you’ll probably be spending a lot more money on food than you typically do. But if you haven’t prepared for these additional costs, it can feel like your budget is spinning out of control. So if you’re going to be going without a kitchen for some time, make sure you have money in your budget for the times when you’ll be eating out.

If you’ve got a major kitchen renovation coming up, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you prepare for this big upheaval.
