3 Tips For Protecting Your Home From Structural Issues

December 6, 2019

When you’re in your home, you want to know that you’re safe from harm. While some harm could come from other people, the most common form of harm that will come to your home will either be from nature itself or from the structure of your home failing to stand up to wear and tear or the elements. But luckily, there are things you can do to avoid these types of issues.

To show you how this can be done, here are three tips for protecting your home from structural issues brought on by nature or poor construction.

Keep Vegetation Away

While you might not initially think that the trees near your home would be something that you’d need to be concerned with, if vegetation is allowed to grow unfettered, it could cause big problems for the structure of your home.

According to Adam Green, a contributor to Angie’s List, trees and shrubs have to fight for the moisture they need when conditions are dry. Because of this, if these plants are too close to your home, they could cause the soil to shift and bring about problems with your home’s foundation. Additionally, if a tree’s roots are too close to your home, they could also cause problems for the structure of the home as they move and grow. To combat this, make sure you’re planting your vegetation a safe distance away from your home.

Use The Best Materials

Although homes can be expensive, it’s well worth your time and money to ensure that you’re using the best materials at the beginning to avoid having to correct mistakes that develop along the way.

As a part of this, Julie Pennell, a contributor to Today.com, advises that you choose materials that are going to be resistant to the type of natural disasters and elements that are frequent in your area. While this might mean paying more now, it could save you from having to make repairs to your home when others in your neighborhood develop structural issues due to weather or other conditions.

Make Sure Everything’s Draining Properly

One of the biggest threats to the structural integrity of your home is water. Without proper drainage, water can pool in areas around your home that could result in major damage.

To avoid this, Robert Kociecki, a contributor to HomeTips.com, recommends that you do your best to divert water away from your home. This can be done through the use of gutters, grading your land, and more. Just so long as you’re able to keep standing water away from the foundation of your home, the structure should be fine.

If you’re worried about structural issues affecting the safety of your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help protect your home from these hazards.
